Personal Reflection #1

Personal Reflection #1

There are many things we have done on this course with our teacher Mr. Gregory Vrhovnik. Our section is CEP and we are group of student of the Engineering College. The groups of my section were good people and we helped each other to do very well in this semester. Gregory was the best teacher ever taught me because he is very kind, gentle and very organized with the schedule. He helped us very much and we improved our skills with this course. I would love that we do another course with him because we learned many things with him.  Most of the tasks that we did will reflect on our personality and how we write better. The most part that I like in this course was writing essays and I did one essay about Twitter and the other one was about the Story of Stuff video. My writing skills got better while doing this course with Gregory and I am happy because that will help me in my life and career. The skills that I learned in this course will help in writing report and understanding articles because we summarized many article in the beginning of the course, so I believe that I will not have many problems with understanding the concept of an article. The biggest challenge for me was to do writing again because it has been ages since I stopped studying, so when I came back to the college I found everything difficult for a while. There no stop to improve a second language and I will try very hard to improve my skills in English.

Essay #2

The Story of Stuff

There are many things that we do not know about in the system that our stuff passes through. First of all, we extract something from the nature to get other thing to use. According to the video "stuff moves through a system from extraction to production to distribution to consumption to disposal" (Story of Stuff, 2007). It is good to own many stuff but the great thing is to know the effect and danger of that on our planet. This is a science has to be taught in schools to make a new generation with a great knowledge about their stuff and how it effect their world.

Extraction

We are running out the sources of the planet by extracting too much stuff out of the nature to get our stuff. The sources we are extracting from the earth are water, animals, minerals, wood and many other things. We extract these sources to industrialize to get different stuff. We used one third of our planet natural resource in the last three decades, and that seriously means we are trashing the earth. For example, 80% of the earth forests are gone. As UNEP's Asia-Pacific office report tell that "Population pressure, heavy dependence of fuel wood as well as forest conversion for economic use are speeding up deforestation in the region, which accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world's forest resources" (Xinhua News Agency, 2002). Countries like America where they ran out of their most sources, they go to the third world to get sources for less price and easier job. As our world has limited sources we need to review our extraction to keep our sources for ever.

Production

The second step after taking out the source from the nature, it goes to production where we use energy and mix toxics chemicals to produce our daily products. Most of the stuff that we buy is not tested for synergistic health impacts and that shows the serious danger we are getting from our lovely stuff. People don’t really know that they are exposed everyday by their stuff. As we use toxics in we got toxics out and that causes the environmental pollution which harm our bodies. The most people are susceptible to poisoning are the factories worker. We can see that not only our sources are affected by this system, climate and people are also.

Distribution

In distribution we find much stuff sold for not their prices for keep the inventory moving and keep people buying stuff. Actually, we don’t pay for the real price. The real payment is paid by the people that worked on making these stuff and their natural resources that been taken to make us these stuff. Also they pay us by getting cancers and pollute their clean air. For example, kids in poor countries leave their schools to work on making our stuff. According to Annie Leonard "That is what I mean by the company owners externalize the true cost of production" (Story of Stuff, 2007).

Consumption

Nowadays, we are becoming more consumers, so we think of people on as much as they consume but we are not realizing the danger of what we consume. The stuff that we work hard and fight to get does not live more than 6 months, except 1% and the other 99% is trashed and that show the real danger that our planet facing because of what we consume. In the past, people hadn’t had many choices like now. Companies make our stuff for short periods and work hard to make us new stuff that we buy, so we consume more and destroy our planet.

Disposal

The waste that we throw every day is useless and harming our planet by the way that they disposal it. Recycling our waste is really important but the problem is not everything could be recycled and it costs very much, so the companies prefer not to recycle. Some of our waste burned and affect the climate by publishing toxics everywhere. According to the way that we disposal our waste "Certain categories of toxic household waste require specific disposal, but general household waste is largely exempt from regulations intended to protect humans, animals, and the environment" (Lerner, M. 2011).

Consumerism in the UAE

The UAE is one of the most consuming countries of the world. There many reasons that made the UAE a high level consumerism such as the openness to the world market and the good economy that we have here. For example, the easy way that people in the UAE can illogical borrowing for stuff are not Inevitable.

We are also consuming a lot of our natural resources such as the oil and groundwater. The UAE export about 2.6 million barrels per day of oil. Also the groundwater in the UAE is depleting fast because of the large usage of it.

Conclusion

To sum up, the system that our stuff goes on is harming our natural life and it will make a worse future for the new generations. Our nations need really to find out rules and try very hard to keep our planet in safe. I think people need to know that they are harming the earth by their unjust

Essay #1

Twitter

1.     Introduction:-

My topic is about Twitter. Twitter is one of the most famous online social networking services. In my essay I am going to look at the early history, development and the modern developments of Twitter. The social networking websites draw attention of a huge number of people in the world. It allows people from all over the world to upload their photos, chatting and sharing information between people from all classes.

2.     Early history:-

Twitter has started with a simple idea by Jack Dorsey when he invented a program of SMS communication by mobile phones between a few of his friends in 2000.  The program was not good enough to make a communication between a large numbers of people. Jack Dorsey thought that the program wouldn’t work and left it. One year later Jack worked for Odeo, a broadcasting company. Odea Company was the owner of Blogger and it has been sold to Google. Jack got interesting in working for a broadcasting company and there he met Twitter cofounders.

Apple announced that they are going to launch a free broadcasting network in the iTunes which will stop the business of the company that Jack work for. He thought to bring up his program trying to get it work with his mates and Evan Williams who was the founder of blogger and work for the company to make a hug social network. In 21nd March, 2006, the program was available to start and it was called "Twttr". He published the first tweet on that day "Just setting up my Twttr" he said, and invited his coworkers. After that they invited their families and there was the birth of Twitter.

3.     Development:-

The growth of Twitter impressed the world in a very short period and got concern all segments of society. At the beginning when Twitter launched it was ranked 116580th visited website in the world, but it moved very fast in short period to get the 8th most visited website in the world because. This movement in ranking Twitter moved fast for many reasons such as the users that it has for all segments. For example, Barack Obama the current President of the United States has an account in Twitter and that account helped on his re-election campaign last week tweeting to people what plans he is providing to win the election and he did it. As it is explained "To keep the social media powerhouse intact as more people, celebrities and world leaders find their roles in the birdcage, Twitter has evolved its aesthetics, functionality and business model. Below, we gathered the best moments in Twitter’s eventful existence to help you reminisce" (Hernandez, B. 2012). Nowadays, Twitter got about 175 million Twitter account activated since it has been launched to the public. The most person in Twitter followed by other people is Lady Gaga and there 30 million followers worldwide to see what she is tweeting. There many news people get from Twitter that been written by trusted people. For bringing up more clients for Twitter the website got to be an application to be used in the phones such as, Twitter Android and iOS apps.

4.     modern developments:-

The developers of the website would put in more features for their clients and these will be by providing ability in showing pictures and videos in the website itself which is not provided yet. The problem that the developers would solve is that Tweets are not showing in a media rich to everyone, it is only showed a media rich for whom using the official Twitter apps and Twitter.com promised that it will be able to use for everyone by June, 2013.

5.     Conclusion:-

Nowadays the online social networking is drawing more attention of people from all classes for sharing of information which made a good knowledge and experience in a fast way. To sum up, Twitter will be a great field of many things for the number of clients and the importance of some of them as it is a great place to advertise and make rumors.

Personal Reflection #1

In the Academic reading and writing 1 I have learned many skills that will help in my academic and general life. There are many skills helped me in my English reading and writing such as, making a short summary for an article and that will help me in doing research in the future. One of the skills that I have learned is making an outline to help me doing a research organized. My teacher Gregory showed us a great way to make the bibliographies to give a credit to authors and not to get plagiarism witch is not allowed by the rules of HCT. Gregory is helping us very hard to improve ourselves in English and to prepared for the next steps witch are more difficult than what we are doing and for sure if we worked hard now everything forward will be much easier than if we didn’t. Gregory got a great way of teaching witch not stress us on doing our work and he is always positive to me and I don’t find any difficulties on doing hard works and I can say that he is the best teacher in the HCT. This is my first semester in the college and I study in the afternoon section and most of my classmates are working in the morning, so sometimes we got challenges and difficulties on doing our work so we try to help each other and work as a group when it's allowed. To sum up, I think this course is very helpful for new entry students and it develop their skills in English witch will make their next courses easier.

The program schemes to conserve Houbara by offer breeding facilities and well cared for chicks. The author explains this point thusly, "Even petting the newly hatched birds has a purpose. Birds that are destined to be used for breeding are trained to be familiar with humans" (Todorova, V. 2011). After vaccinating females and hatching their eggs, Houbara will be released twice in the year into the wild. The program has succeeded in increasing the number of Houbara and saving them from extinction.
